This past April, at the 2012 Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo, I got to meet for the second time Chicago TV-legend Rich “Svengoolie” Koz. For many years, Koz, as Svengoolie, has been the host of a local program that airs classic horror films and sci-fi B-movies (the show has recently begun airing across the nation on Me-TV stations). Sven is not only the inspiration behind Ribcage’s current job as a local horror show host in Grimstone, but it was on his original Son of Svengoolie show that I first encountered the Universal monster movies that played an enormous part in the creation of Grimstone itself.
Last year when I met him at C2E2 for the first time, I gave him an issue of the Grimstone comic book series. This year, I did one better and drew a picture of Svengoolie and Ribcage together like old pals. I got one copy signed for myself (now framed with the photo of Sven and I) and gave Sven a copy for himself. Here is that drawing:
Well, today I got an email from Svengoolie. The drawing is going to be shown at the end of the mail segment on Saturday night’s airing of Revenge of the Creature (May 12, 9PM Central on Me-TV, check your local listings). I’m pretty excited about the whole thing, and I’m looking forward to watching the show. I hope you will all watch too.
As for Grimstone itself, I think this just might be the little push I need to get back to working on it. Stay tuned.
